Satellites are used for civil and military applications. In addition to position determination, satellites are also used for voice and data traffic. Increasingly, satellites are being used by military personnel mainly because of the beyond-line-of-sight aspect: the guaranteed connection for large distances. This need is fed by requirement for broadband connectivity, so that a lot of data can be sent in a short time. SurCom provides both fixed and mobile systems, and even on-the-move systems.
